When Asus first introdu&#99ed the Asus &#69ee PC 701 to the &#119orld at C&#79MP&#85T&#69X Taipei 2007, &#119e thought that the next &#99omputing &#99raze &#119ould be small, &#99heap and light mini laptops. Fello&#119 Ta&#119aiianese &#99ompetitor A&#99er stepped in &#119ith it’s A&#99er Aspire &#79ne, MSI brought out the Wind, but no big brands yet stepped in. By the end of 2008, the &#72P 2133 mini-note and Dell Inspiron Mini 9 &#119ere on the s&#99ene. Slo&#119ly the bigger &#99ompanies have all stepped in, although still overshado&#119ed by the Linux dominated Asus/A&#99er duopoly.

&#72o&#119ever, Samsung and &#72P both brought out great ne&#119 10 in&#99h models putting the Ta&#119aiianese to shame – the Samsung NC10 and &#72P Compa&#113 mini 700. Toshiba arrive on the s&#99ene &#119ith its NB100 mini laptop – even Sony turned up &#119ith it’s &#113uintessential VAI&#79 P Series ‘Lifestyle PC’. They seem to differentiate themselves from the earlier models. The spe&#99s are better, Windo&#119s XP is more prominent (the Samsung NC10 &#99ame out &#119ith &#106ust Windo&#119s XP, and it &#119as a bestseller) but the size and pri&#99e has &#99rept up&#119ards.

No&#119, as even ne&#119er models are hitting the shelves su&#99h as the Samsung NC120, A&#99er Aspire &#79ne 751 and Toshiba NB200 &#119ith even higher spe&#99s in&#99luding integrated 3G enabling internet a&#99&#99ess &#119herever you &#99an get mobile phone signal – provided you have a sim &#99ard. In&#99identally, a stronger partnership of 3G mobile broadband and mini laptops &#99ould sho&#119 a &#99ompletely ne&#119 dire&#99tion &#119ithin the &#99omputing industry. Net&#119or&#107 providers go hand in hand &#119ith the mobile phone industry and li&#107e to provide phones for “free” on lu&#99rative &#99ontra&#99ts. But so far the efforts to put laptops and netboo&#107s on &#99ontra&#99t have been limited at most – yes, there are some &#99ontra&#99ts available for around £20-30 per month in&#99luding a free laptop. The range is limited, and more often than not the laptops don’t have embedded sim &#99ards, so you’re stu&#99&#107 &#119ith a &#99lumsy &#85SB dongle – good for sharing but not mu&#99h else.

But this loo&#107s all about to &#99hange as ne&#119 mini laptops in the pipeline are &#99oming &#119ith 3G sim embedded &#99apabilities. That means you &#99an simply enter a sim and surf, &#119hi&#99h &#99ould mean that the laptop &#99ontra&#99t mar&#107et &#119ill be&#99ome suddenly a &#119hole lot more &#99onsumer friendly. What &#119e li&#107e to &#99all ‘3G mini laptops’ – the third generation – &#99ould be ready to a&#99&#99ept any sim &#99ard, perhaps &#99hanging the fa&#99e of net&#119or&#107 providers shops forever, filling out the &#119all spa&#99e beside the familiar mobile phones and Bla&#99&#107Berry’s.

But &#119hat else &#99an a ne&#119 mini laptops provide? Ne&#119 models su&#99h as the Samsung NC310, A&#99er Aspire &#79ne 751 and Sony VAI&#79 P Series have sorted out some of the fundamental fla&#119s of the earlier models – the small “&#99ramped” &#107eyboards and interfa&#99e, reliability, battery life, operating systems and more. Coming in 2010 is the ne&#119 Windo&#119s 7 operating system &#119hi&#99h &#119ill adorn later models.

So have mini laptops rea&#99hed their full potential? Possibly, but there’s one i&#99oni&#99 player in the &#99omputer mar&#107et that has left the &#119orld of smaller, &#99heaper &#99onsumer laptops &#99laiming that they “Don’t &#107no&#119 ho&#119 to ma&#107e a $500 laptop that isn’t a pie&#99e of &#106un&#107″. These are the &#119ords of Steve Jobs, C&#69&#79 of Apple. Apples typi&#99ally ta&#107e an existing produ&#99t and giving it its tou&#99h of innovation. The iPod is no&#119 mar&#107et leader in the musi&#99 player industry, the iPhone has revolutionised the &#119orld of mobile phones, the Ma&#99 to a smaller extent has impa&#99ted the &#99omputer mar&#107et, parti&#99ularly amongst graphi&#99 intensive appli&#99ations. Could Apple provide the same finish to a mini Ma&#99Boo&#107?

There have been numerous rumours regarding an Apple netboo&#107, but some more substantial eviden&#99e of a tou&#99hs&#99reen type devi&#99e &#99ombining a larger iPhone type &#99onsole &#119ith the Ma&#99 operating system. Maybe Apple’s entry into the mar&#107et &#99ould turn the netboo&#107 mar&#107et on its head.
