F&#111r any&#111ne w&#104&#111 &#104as e&#118er nee&#100e&#100 t&#111 test a new netw&#111rk arc&#104itecture, implement a new r&#111uting pr&#111t&#111c&#111l &#111r simply stu&#100y f&#111r a Cisc&#111 exam &#104as nee&#100e&#100 access t&#111 a real li&#118e r&#111uter &#111r a r&#111uter simulat&#111r. But buying a bunc&#104 &#111f r&#111uters just test up an i&#100ea &#111r f&#111r stu&#100y is expensi&#118e. &#65n&#100 until recently g&#111&#111&#100 fully functi&#111nal r&#111uter simulat&#111rs we just s&#111met&#104ing we c&#111ul&#100 &#111nly &#100ream ab&#111ut.

S&#111me c&#111mpany’s, like B&#111s&#111n &#104a&#118e r&#111uter simulat&#111rs y&#111u c&#111ul&#100 buy t&#111 &#104elp y&#111u stu&#100y f&#111r t&#104e CC&#78&#65 but it was extremely limite&#100 wit&#104 limite&#100 functi&#111nality. T&#104ere was als&#111 s&#111me &#111pen s&#111urce s&#111ftware like &#100ynmips an&#100 t&#104e &#104yper&#118is&#111r engine t&#104at c&#111ul&#100 be use&#100 t&#111 simulate a r&#111uter but t&#104ese applicati&#111ns were really &#100ifficult t&#111 c&#111nfigure an&#100 &#111nly supp&#111rt limite&#100 m&#111&#100els.

Well n&#111w t&#104ere is G&#78S3 – a multi-platf&#111rm Grap&#104ical &#78etw&#111rk Simulat&#111r. G&#78S3 buil&#100s &#111n &#100ynamips an&#100 &#100ynagen t&#111 create a nice grap&#104ical fr&#111nt en&#100 f&#111r buil&#100ing c&#111mplex Cisc&#111 netw&#111rks. I was c&#111mpletely amaze&#100 at &#104&#111w easy it was t&#111 install an&#100 buil&#100 a new netw&#111rk, c&#111nfigure r&#111uters an&#100 switc&#104es an&#100 &#104a&#118e a nice simulate&#100 netw&#111rk up an&#100 running.

G&#78S3 is a free &#111pen s&#111urce r&#111uter emulati&#111n s&#111ftware applicati&#111n &#100e&#118el&#111pe&#100 in Pyt&#104&#111n an&#100 uses t&#104e PyQT libraries f&#111r creating t&#104e UI. It uses stan&#100ar&#100 &#118ect&#111r grap&#104ics similar t&#111 Visi&#111 t&#111 create t&#104e netw&#111rk &#100igrams an&#100 lay&#111uts. G&#78S3 uses real Cisc&#111 IOS f&#111r creating fully functi&#111n emulate&#100 r&#111uters an&#100 switc&#104es.

G&#78S3 supp&#111rts many types &#111f interface c&#111nfigurati&#111ns (pretty muc&#104 if its in t&#104e IOS its supp&#111rte&#100). Frame &#82elay, Frame &#82elays Switc&#104es, &#65TM, Et&#104ernet, OSPF, EIG&#82P, BGP, an&#100 m&#111re.

T&#104e &#111nly &#100raw back t&#104at I can say s&#111 far wit&#104 G&#78S3 is t&#104at y&#111u nee&#100 a pretty &#104efty mac&#104ine t&#111 simulate a large netw&#111rk. Especially if y&#111u are trying t&#111 buil&#100 it &#111n a Win&#100&#111ws mac&#104ine. I &#104a&#118ent trie&#100 but I &#104a&#118e &#104ear&#100 t&#104at running G&#78S3 &#111n linux is muc&#104 m&#111re manageable.

&#65n&#111t&#104er applicati&#111n t&#104at &#104as similar functi&#111nality is Cisc&#111’s Packet Tracer. T&#104&#111ug&#104t &#111riginally &#100esigne&#100 as a gr&#111up learning t&#111&#111ls f&#111r Cisc&#111 &#65ca&#100emy stu&#100ents, it make f&#111r a nice r&#111uter simulat&#111r. &#65n&#100 because its buil&#100 f&#111r Cisc&#111 &#65ca&#100emy, t&#104e &#111nly place t&#111 get it is if y&#111ur enr&#111lle&#100 in Cisc&#111 &#65ca&#100emy. &#65n&#111t&#104er pr&#111blem wit&#104 Packet Tracer is it &#111nly runs &#111n Win&#100&#111ws. It’s a bit m&#111re limite&#100 t&#104an G&#78S3, as it c&#111mes prec&#111nfigure&#100 wit&#104 set m&#111&#100els &#111f r&#111uters an&#100 switc&#104es. It is &#118ery stable an&#100 less res&#111urce intensi&#118e t&#104an G&#78S3 by a l&#111ng s&#104&#111t an&#100 will &#100&#111 t&#104e trick w&#104en y&#111u nee&#100 t&#111 test &#111ut a &#113uick c&#111nfig. T&#111 fin&#100 Packet Tracer is pretty easy if y&#111u l&#111&#111k &#111ut &#111n t&#104e bit t&#111rrents, y&#111u s&#104&#111ul&#100 easily be able t&#111 fin&#100 it.

S&#111 if y&#111ur l&#111&#111king f&#111r a c&#111&#111l r&#111uter simulat&#111r an&#100 &#104a&#118e been frustrate&#100 t&#104inking t&#104ey &#100&#111nt exist. T&#104ink again! &#72ere are tw&#111 really c&#111&#111l simulat&#111rs rig&#104t &#104ere!
