Buying the First Laptop

October 26th, 2009

Thinking about buying your first laptop? Many people quote portability and convenience as top reasons they purchase laptops instead of desktops for their computing needs. With such a wide variety of laptops available for purchase, it’s important to consider carefully what your needs are before buying your first laptop. The first thing you need to decide is what kind of laptop you need, so you should ask yourself what you will use the laptop most for. Different needs dictate different specifications of the laptop best for you.

People choose laptops for a variety of purposes. One of the largest group of new laptop owners are students, who tend to be on tight budgets. It used to be that laptops were much more expensive than desktops, but today, laptops called notebooks are in a student’s price range. These notebook computers are small and light, making them very portable However, these laptops tend to be limited in function, as many of them do not have a CD/DVD drive. These laptops are ideal for doing homework and reading the news and are generally ideal for students.

Another type of laptop user is the business person. People who only require access to spreadsheets, and word processing can get by with a lower end laptop. However, many business people require a little more in their laptops. In this case, there are laptops that have more memory, faster processing and many more functions. These computers are going to be more expensive and a bit bulkier, but they offer the business world the ability to use their computers for everything from memos and email to PowerPoint presentations.

Home users are another group of people who have started using laptops more and more often. This group of people uses their computer for a very wide variety of reasons: browsing the internet, paying bills, email, IM-ing and, frequently for games. If gaming is a priority for this individual, a dedicated graphic card is a must. Downloading music, pictures and videos are also done very often by the home user, so it’s important to consider the memory of the laptop.

A few things to look for when buying your first laptop are battery power, display screen, hard drive, memory and processing. Do your research ahead of time, and you’ll know exactly what your needs are to get the best first laptop for you.

Laptop Buying Tips

October 19th, 2009

Buying a new laptop can be an expensive business. With the top of the range models changing hands for close to a thousand pounds and a mind-boggling array of dual-core processors, VGA graphics and other techno-speak to confuse the uninitiated, it can also be an intimidating process. So if you’re planning on investing some of your hard-earned cash on a laptop, what should you be looking for?

Comfort and ergonomics

If you’re going to be spending any length of time working at a laptop, you want it to be comfortable. Neck strain is a real problem when using a laptop, because the monitor is rarely at the optimum position for comfortable usage. Problems such as RSI and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are also associated with extended use of keyboards, and as the keyboards on laptops can be considerably more cramped than those on desktop PCs, the advice here is try before you buy. The larger the laptop, the closer its keyboard will resemble a desktop PC design.

Most laptops also incorporate either a touchpad or tracking pointer as a replacement for an external mouse. Although fine for occasional use, if you’re using a mouse constantly (such as with gaming or graphics packages), you may find that a touchpad makes the cursor more difficult to control. Check the sensitivity of the touchpad on the laptop you’re interested in and if it doesn′t match your needs, shop around for one that does.

Connectivity

Upgrades are not as practical an option on a laptop as they are with a desktop PC, so being able to connect to external devices is important. Cheaper laptops may not have as many USB ports and often will not have a printer port at all, so if you’re using external devices that require connectivity through a printer port, a laptop may not be the answer. The best option is to look for a laptop that more than meets your needs, and has plenty of ‘wriggle room’ if you want to use it for more advanced applications.

Connectivity to the Internet is also vital. Internal modems that will connect quickly and easily to Wi-Fi provision has made the laptop a modern marvel, allowing you to surf the ‘net almost anywhere in the world. Check the speed of your connection, whether it has Bluetooth and how easy it is to use on the go.

That all-important battery life

The whole point of a laptop is to free yourself from the confines of cables, wires and being tethered to one place. But laptop batteries are notorious for their limited lifespan, with even the very best laptops only just managing to achieve seven or eight hours before they need to be hooked up to the mains. The average is four to five hours, but if you’re using processor-heavy applications, that figure could be reduced considerably. If you’re looking for a laptop that will download movies or operate high-resolution graphics packages such as games or CAD programmes, then go for one that has the longest battery life, unless you’re happy to be tethered to the mains all the time.

Size matters

The whole point of buying a laptop is to give you the flexibility to use your computer on the go. So the size and weight is a key factor when choosing your laptop. Larger displays, multiple hard drives and other integrated components will all add to the weight and size of your laptop. The largest source of weight may be the battery, so if you decide to choose a model that has two batteries to benefit from the extended run time in between recharges, expect it to be considerably heavier. There are small, lightweight laptops with extremely long battery life times, but these are far more expensive than the average laptop.

If you’re spending a lot of time travelling abroad, the size and weight of your laptop is going to be much more important, so once again, shop around and if you’re only using your laptop for a limited range of functions, consider looking at Netbooks as an alternative.

Finally, remember that laptops are not future-proof. The technology used in laptops is advancing at an astonishing rate and laptops are difficult to upgrade, particularly the central processing units. Buy one that is more than capable of doing everything you want it to do right now, and has plenty of memory to cope with additional software that you may be tempted to add in the future.

Wireless Internet and Airports – High Tech Ways to Survive Delays

October 10th, 2009

Right now isn’t a particularly great time for air travel. With ever-increasing lines, security measures that seem to change with the whims of those administering them, and even higher fees for extra bags, it is both economically and emotionally taxing to choose the skies as your way to move around. But sometimes, driving just isn’t an option, so it is necessary to brave the madhouse that is your nearest airport and try to hope for the best.

One advantage to travel these days, however, is that more and more airports are wired. This means that travelers who happen to have a laptop or a smartphone can get online thanks to wireless internet, which in some cases is even complimentary. Likewise, if you happen to board the plane only to find out that it is going to be sitting on the ground for a few hours, those airlines that provide wireless service on the plane make it a lot easier to be stuck in your seat for three hours before even reaching your cruising altitude.

Another advantage to the growing presence of wireless internet in airports is that it has never been easier for customers to get the information they need on their delays–or to try and get some answers from an unresponsive customer service department. With so many travelers Twitter-savvy, airlines are having to resolve problems, lest they be publicly shamed by their customers. A number of them, including JetBlue, hire tech-savvy employees just to comb Twitter and try to resolve problems. So if you get to your gate only to find out that you’ve been bumped, it might be a great idea to tweet about it rather than yell at the person behind the counter. It seems that things get resolved quicker that way.

But even the wireless service in airports has its fair share of problems. When a number of travelers are all stranded at the same time and trying to get online, it definitely makes the network slow down, meaning that trying to video-chat at home is not going to be possible. And there’s always the matter of airports and airlines in general trying to make an extra buck. You really don’t believe that an airline known for charging extra for the pillow and blankets is going to let you surf the internet for free, do you? It just doesn’t make economic sense.

One way to get around the high costs of Wi-Fi that can exist is to simply go with your phone instead. Smartphones that operate on the 4G network are capable of streaming video footage for entertainment purpose, accessing Skype for making long-distance calls without running up one’s minutes, and even allowing the chance to check with the airline’s website to see if there are any updates on the situation. But doing all of these things from a phone can get a little tough. After all, a touchscreen was not really designed to deal with everything that is required when trying to comb the internet for who to call to register a complaint after being stuck in an airport for a few days.

The best way for tech-savvy travelers to surf the web as much as they like without needing to rely on a cell phone or the airport’s service is to just invest in WiMax. This new technology provides wireless service no matter where you are, thanks to a technological model that more closely resembles the way that a series of towers bounce the signal to provide millions with reliable cell phone service no matter where they are. With this new form of wireless, the same approach is used, only it’s being applied to the internet. This means that whether you’re in Logan Airport or LAX, you can get online without paying extra and have access to a network that’s not lagging due to thousands of people using it at once.

Laptop Keyboard Repair and Replacement

October 7th, 2009

Are you considering laptop keyboard repair? You might think twice if you happen to be the lucky owner of a Compaq Presario, because replacing the keyboard rather than repairing it could be a lot less expensive. Laptop keyboard replacement on this particular model is very easy and takes just a few minutes. Here is a quick laptop keyboard repair tutorial with step-by-step instructions.

Once you have purchased the new keyboard, all you need to replace the old with the new is a screwdriver and something plastic, flat and thin like a credit card or guitar pick.

Step one: Remove the two screws from the bottom of the computer that are holding down the keyboard bezel. The bezel is the bar that sits right above all the function keys.

Step two: Turn the computer over, open the cover and insert the credit card or guitar pick between the bezel and the computer screen. The bezel has pegs that sit in holes, you need to slowly pry up the bezel. It will make a bit of a popping noise as it is removed.

Step three: Now hold on to the keyboard from the end closest to the screen and gently pull it away from the touch-pad end and flip it over. You will see the ribbon attached to the underside of the keyboard. There is a little plastic connector holding the ribbon to the computer. To unlock it, carefully pull up on the two tabs; one located on each corner of the connector. Be very gentle when you do this as this is the one part that gets broken the most often when changing a keyboard. The ribbon will now be released.

Step four: Carefully pull the ribbon out of the connector and remove it along with the entire keyboard.

Final step: To insert the new keyboard, place the board face down so you have easy access to the ribbon. Make sure the keyboard is lined up so when you flip it back over the keys are in the correct position. Keep the ribbon straight at all times; twisting it could damage it. Place the ribbon in the connector; it only goes in one way. Once in place, push down on the connector tabs to lock it. Now flip the keyboard over and slide it down toward the touch pad and take the bezel and line the pegs up with the holes and push it in place. Then turn the computer over and replace the two screws you removed from the bottom. You can now power on your computer and see if the keyboard works. If it is not working, more than likely the ribbon was not inserted properly.

Finding the Best Laptop For Small Kids

October 4th, 2009

Are you curios about the best laptop for your small kids? I’m sure you′ve noticed by now that your kids like to mimic pretty much everything you are doing. Whether you′re cooking in the kitchen or changing TV programs with the remote control or putting make-up on, kids will try out everything.

Many times I had a laugh when I saw my daughter putting on her mom’s make-up and pretend she was a grown up. Or my son taking charge of the remote control to expertly cruise through the hundreds of programs we have. Or put in a new music DVD in the player all by himself. They look so sweet when they try to be grown-ups. The good thing is that by mimicking the tasks of the adult, they are learning lots in the process. So why not make the laptop a tool for learning as well as something they can truly enjoy?

Obviously small kids won′t have access to expensive pc’s and gadgets, but there are plenty out there that fit the criteria that needs to be fulfilled in order to be fit for toddlers. When I grew up notebooks were non existent and computers were not available for regular folks. You could only find them in universities under strong supervision. Nowadays I’ve seen children as small as 6 years old playing various computer games, and by the time they are 10, they are expert programmers. I still shudder at my pathetic attempts at learning Pascal back in college.

So what types of laptops are best for your small kids? Well you might have a daughter who is in the very pink mood. Girls like pink quite for a few years so you can make use of that little bit of information. The Vtech Tote ‘n Go Pink Laptop are some that come to mind here. It has a strong color that attracts attention and she will love it and learn from it for quite a while.

Regardless whether she is left handed or right handed, she will be able to use it safely as the mouse is detachable. By using the laptop and mouse now, by the time she is ready for a real computer, she will have learned the basics of handling the equipment properly and will be very comfortable in using it. Some of the skills she can learn in the process are language and mathematics skills. Also she can learn music and various learning games that will help develop her mind faster.

By using a kid’s laptop when they are small, kids will have all the skills necessary to tackle a real one when they are big enough and will simply see the new, real computer as an upgrade of their previous one, that will be sure to excite them to no end. Learning with a laptop for small kids is one of the best and modern way to prepare your small kids for the real world out there.

Database Programming Languages

September 30th, 2009

Programming languages such as C++, BASIC, and Pascal were produced as general function languages, which means that you can use them to write a flight simulator, an accounting program, a voice identification program, or a word processor.

One of the most common uses for computers, however, is storing and recalling information, such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, prison records, credit history, and past job experience. Calculators store such data in a database. Almost every business relies on databases to store info about clients, inventories, and employees, so nearly every company uses a database program.

Unluckily, most people don’t want to know the strange and often freaky commands necessary to store, retrieve, or print info from a database. To make databases easier to use, most databases include a programming specific language. If you publish programs using a database′s programming language, you can produce custom databases for various companies. Best of all, database programming languages enable you to create customized databases much faster than using a generic purpose language such as C++ or BASIC.

If you use a database programming language, you write instructions only to falsify the database info. If you use a general function language such as C+, you must write commands to store info and then write supplementary instructions to manipulate that info, fundamentally doubling the quantity of work to execute the same task.

Database programming languages can fulfill the next specific functions:

-If you are composing a software that stores vast chunks of information, you can write a programme much faster by using a database programming language than by using a general function language such as C++ or Pascal.

-Database programming is a profitable field. If you know how to create personalized databases, you virtually never need to worry about being jobless or not making enough money.
